Modernistic ethnographic
treatment of Korean paper

A noticiable characteristic of the modern art scene is to be found in the fact that the artists are vying with one another on the strength of their novel approaches to or techniques of molding and the uniqueness of their modes of expression. And that a realization of modernistic artistic values is a presupposition of their creative process.

In the past few decades the development of modern art in Korea has been a process heavily influenced by new trends in the art of the West. There have been not a few Korean artists who pursued their own unique concepts of molding and expression, however. Theirs has been an effort to build a tra-dition in the country’s modem art which can claim its own place in the world art scene.

Although there is a wide variety of techniques and forms being tested the final appraisal of either sucess of failure of an artist hinges on his expressiveness of an inner dimension and his artistic honesty. This also has to do with the degree of refinement of his skill.

In this regard the works of Chul Park which are done in relief utilizing Korean paper (made from mulberry fiber) are noteworthy. He uses Korean
paper and printed and handwritten pages from old books, items with ethnic, nostalgic implications, in his compositions. He uses these together with lattices, straw mats, etc, which he salvages from abandoned farm houses to create his reliefs.
Originally an abstract oil painter, Chul Park began to devote himself to giv-ing an expression to ethnographic qualities unique to Korea through
paper-molding a few years ago. He held his first exhibition of paper relief works at the Hyundai Department Store Gallery in 1989. The motivation of his switch to the new art genre was explained by him in an article he wrote for
an art magazine.
While a lecturer at Andong University in North Kyungsang Province in 1986 he saw a farm village being submerged as a result of a dam construction near Andong. Before the village was submerged he had had an opportunity to
salvage door frames, lattices, farming tools, straw mats, etc, from the farm houses there. It was at this time that be conceived an art form for the preser-vation of an afterimage of life in a disappearing community and the conception eventually came to bear fruits in the paper works he created.
His creating process comes in three phases. In the first phase he prepares a thick base with a mixture of plaster and cement. In the next he impresses the base with door frames, lattices, straw mats, roof tiles of a door with a doorpull according to his minutely calculated composition. In the next and finnal phase he presses layer after layer of Korean water or the pages of the old books after soaking them in water in the mold formed in the base by the im-pression of the farm house objects. When the molded paper relief is dried in the sun he has his works completed. He sometimes paints colors on the result of his formative art. The artist wrote in his magazine article:
It occured to me that carving and modeling might be more effective in imparting what I felt to the viewer than oil painting or drawing. And to give my works an ethnic quality I chose orange color and light green. the serene colors, reminiscent of Korean's traditional costumes, to finish them. In the course of repeated experiments I found that the farm objects and the tra-ditional Korean paper came into perfect harmony with each other.
It was this perfect harmony that has made the artist’s experiement a success. He has succeeded in developing an artistic world of his own by means of giv-ing an expression to a traditional way of life.
But he may have perceived limits to the scope of materials he chose to bring into his composition for beginning last year he has brought the violin into the world of his art. In other words, he has expanded his horizen to em- brace things western as well. I expect the scope of his motifs continue to ex-pand in the future. He is sure to continue to draw our attention.
