Trace of the Lapse of Time and
Fortitude of Reconstruction
Park,Chul’s Work with Korean Paper

Park Chul was born in Jom-chon of Kyungsang-bukdo,where is not far from An-dong. Nearby there exist submerged districts formed by the construction of Lim-wha Dam. I suppose the fact that his work has much to do with Lim-wha Dam is helpful for my interpretation of his work.

As Lim-wha Dam was constructed, inhabitants there were obliged to leave their hometown and houses were laid waste. Park Chul began to frequent there, for he was attached to our cultural legacy. First he picked up mis-cellaneous household goods and agricultural implements. With the lapse of time, he felt himself more and more attached to that place and finally came to produce works with the motif he found there. We can be assured of the importance of his attachment to those submerged districts for his works, as we see usually on his works doors of old houses, broken tiles of roofs. saddles, straw mats, mangers, jars and pots.

He came across doors of old houses and decided to fi-gure the image of those doors. Doors he found there were severely impaired. They were almost ruined and looked miserable. Houses which were not inhabited loo-ked likewise so desolate and dreary. There he could ea-sily imagine the humble image of our fellow countrymen who were pushed away by advancing waves of civiliza-tion.

Once he noted his impression as follows: ‘I saw the wasted, vacant houses and there also windows which looked so abashed. I felt loneliness and vanity that we were forced to endure in the reality of discontinuity of our tradition."

His works of the submerged districts entail the mea- ning that is not restricted to love of hometown. What we can see there, is in a sense the appearance of ourselves who are being eroded by the power of civilization and at once the image of our tradition that is being faded. In the works produced following his motto, “Pictures must have nationality", we can visualize his consistent effort to animate the breathing of our cultural tradition in a more refined aesthetic form.

Recently, since 1991, he has made a new attempt cal-led “Ensemble.” He juxtaposed different kinds of things on one canvas, for example, contrasting straw mats and old books with violin, cello and their bows. The contrast of straw mats with violins may appear unnatural and aw-kward. But in his attempt we can see how strenuously he has been occupied with connecting the old and the new, the folk and the western. In other words, this means that his vision is not limited to the regional prob-lem, but expanded to the more generalized ones.

The special merit of his works lies in that they are not following the old without reservation, but assimilating the old with new methods harmonized with contempo-rary aesthetic sense. He shows himslef that this kind of work is only possible when one face the difficulty with extraordinary fortitude. His strenuous efforts that he has made persistently to get over the problems of tradi-tion throw a ray of hope that is very rare in the present day.
