한지와 멍석 그리고 떡살을 기억하는 박철 작가의 화면

쥴리아나갤러리서 한국인 정서 깃든 멍석 등 담은 작업 선보여

쥴리아나갤러리가 한지만을 갖고 전통적 한국성을 현대적으로 표현하는 박철 작가의 개인전을 5월 26일~6월 18일 연다. 

작가는 그동안 서양적이고 귀족적인 이미지인 바이올린의 형태, 그리고 우리의 토속적이며 서민과 함께 이어져 온 멍석의 형태를 함께 표현해 동·서양의 충돌과 만남 그리고 조화를 표현해 왔다. 이번 전시에서는 색다른 시도를 보여준다. 서양적 이미지는 사라지고 한국인의 정서가 깃든 멍석의 표면의 질감과 여러 감각적인 단색만으로 표현해 보여준다.

특히 화면은 어린 시절 농촌에서 태어나 자란 작가의 경험까지 담아 더욱 생생한 느낌을 준다. 작가는 오래돼 때가 묻은 창호지를 일제히 바꾸는 작업이 매우 자연스러웠고, 가을엔 각종 농작물을 멍석 위에 말려서 추수하곤 했다. 그래서 그에겐 멍석이 유독 남다르다. 추운 겨울 농한기가 오면 할아버지들이 사랑방에 모여 볏짚으로 멍석을 짜던 모습도 생생하다. 구정이나 추석 모여서 떡을 만든 다음 반드시 떡살(떡의 문양을 찍는 도구)을 찍어 떡을 완성 시키는 과정도 지켜보며 자랐다. 이 모든 다양한 경험들이 현재 작가의 작업에 고스란히 녹아 들었다.

멍석은 옛 시골 농민들의 애환과 생활을 함께 담았다. 동시에 이 멍석을 구성하고 있는 짚들의 짜임은 오늘의 현대미술인 단색화에서 볼 수 있듯 형태의 반복적 표현이라는 점에서 눈길을 끈다. 쥴리아나갤러리는 "작가는 이와 같은 전통적 토속미의 현대화라는 절묘한 관계를 포착해 새롭게 표현한다"며 "한국 전통미의 세계화에 몰입하는 작가의 작업에 주목하길 바란다"고 밝혔다.

작가는 "우리 고래의 것들이 오늘날 아쉽게 사라지고 없어져 가는 것을 차용해 작품으로 연결 하는 작업을 하고 있다"며  "한지와 멍석, 떡살 등을 어떻게 현대화할 지, 새로운 미학과 새로운 미적 표현이라는 것을 화두로 작업을 계속 이어갈 것"이라고 밝혔다.

한편 박철 작가는 1950년생으로, 48회의 국내외 개인전과 세계 여러 도시에서 열리는 아트페어 등 많은 단체전에 참가해 왔다. 현재 홍익대학교 미술대학원에서 후학을 가르치고 있다.

Park, Chul’s work full of Screen remembers the Hanji, straw mat (Mokseok), and rice-cake model.2017-05-10
In Juliana Gallery, to show park’s works which are Korean emotions with straw mat etc.

Julianna Gallery presents a solo exhibition of Park Chul, who presents traditional Korean castles such as hanji (Korean paper) its willing to combine with in contemporary way, from May 26th to June 18th.
The artist has long been a Western and aristocratic image of the form of violin, and he expressed with our folk style form of meongseok(straw mat) continued on with the people together. This works have been expressed the conflict, encounter and harmony of East and West.This exhibition shows a different approach. It disappears the Western image and just focused on the Korean emotion express by the texture of the surface of the straw mat the sense of monochrome.
Especially, the full of painting surface gives artist's experiences and a more vivid feel to rise in rural areas. The artist is very natural to work on changing old changhoji paper, (traditionalKorean papermadefrom mulberry bark paper), in the fall, he used to harvest a variety of crops in the top of straw mat by drying them. So the straw mat is very special for him. When winter unoccupied farming seasonsthe grandfathers gathered in the room and weaved straw mats with rice straws.Also, When Korean New Year or Thanks giving (Chuseok) that gathered and made rice cake. That he always watched the process of how to completing the rice cake by taking the rice cake mold(a tool to take the pattern of the rice cake).All of these many experiences have now been incorporated into his art work.
Mokgeok(straw mat) has been accompanied by the affliction and life of the old rural farmers. At the same time, the weaving of the straws mat that pattern makesto attract attention in that it is a repetitive representation of the form as seen in monochromatic of today’s contemporary art.The Juliana Gallery said, "The artist captures and expresses the exquisite relationship of modernization of traditional indigenous beauty."and”To pay attention to the work of the artist who is immersed in the globalization of Korean traditional beauty"
The artist said that“ are working on linking our works to the works that are disappearing and disappearing today."These day our Korean culture disappearing but I want to use material from our culture's things that linking to our works using our disappearance and disappearance." and  "I will continue to work on how to modernize hanji(Korean paper), straw mat, and rice cakemold, this kind material will a new aesthetic and new aesthetic expression. "
 Meanwhile, Park Chul was born in 1950 and has participated in many group exhibitions including 48 domestic and foreign solo exhibitions and art fair held in various cities around the world.Currently He is professor in University ofHongik Graduate School of Fine Arts department.
